- Please, look at the map. Australia is a continent and a country the same time. It is an island. Australia is situated in the Southern Hemisphere. Australia is the world’s largest island and its smallest continent. Australia is washed by the Indian sea from the west, by the Coral sea and the Tasman sea from the east. The capital of Australia is Canberra. One of the largest cities is Sidney. Australia is divided into six states and two territories.
