- Presentation. The teacher tells the students about Dia de Los Muertos, or Day of the Dead. It is another wonderful seasonal tradition from Mexico. A museum in Minneapolis works with students to create “ofrendas”, or little altars, to honor their loved ones. (10 minutes)
- The Day of the Dead is a holiday traditionally celebrated on November 1 and 2. Families and friends gather to pay respects and remember friends and family members who have died. These celebrations can take a humorous tone, as celebrants remember amusing events and anecdotes about the departed. It is also common to give gifts to friends such as candy sugar skulls and to create home altars to remember the dead. Traditional dishes include sweet bread called Pan de Muerto, hearty stews like Pozole and Mole, and masa-based foods such as Tamales.
