Read the four texts in the student book and choose one which is the most interesting for you. Then read a parallel text (below) and create your own short text about 1 animal for which use one text from the student’s book and one extra text.

COMPARE-1 (http://www.alligatorfur.com/alligator.htm)*

The American alligator (Alligator mississippiensis) is the largest reptile in North America. The ancestors of the American alligator appeared 200 million years ago. The name alligator comes from early Spanish explorers who called them "El legarto" or "big lizard" when they first saw these giant reptiles. Today, Louisiana has the highest alligator population, over one million wild alligators with over a quarter million more on alligator farms. Although alligators can be found in ponds, lakes, canals, rivers, swamps, and bayous, in Louisiana the highest population occur in coastal marshes. Of the almost 4.5 million acres of alligator habitat available in Louisiana, coastal marshes account for over 3 million, followed by cypress-tupelo swamp (750,600 acres), Atchafalya Basin swamp (207,000 acres) and lakes (32,105 acres).

COMPARE-2 (https://snakebuddies.net/2010/07/22/rattlesnakes-of-arizona/)*

Arizona is one of the best places to see snakes in the wild. The Sonoran Desert has a very broad range of the reptiles. It is home to 13 different species of rattlesnake alone! Many people don’t realize that one rattlesnake is any different from another.

Rattlesnakes are fascinating animals, and deserve our utmost respect. If you happen to see one in the wild, it is best to keep a safe distance. These unique reptiles are not the demons they are portrayed to be. They only bite to eat, and to defend themselves. Most accidents (around 80% of bites) happen when someone (usually a 20 to 30 year-old male, who has been consuming alcohol) either tries to catch or to kill one of these magnificent creatures.

COMPARE-3(https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grizzly_bear#Conflicts_with_humans)*

Only about 1,500 grizzlies are left in the lower 48 states of the US. Grizzly bears normally avoid contact with people. They rarely actively hunt humans. Most grizzly attacks result from a bear that has been surprised at very close range, especially if it has a supply of food to protect, or females protecting their babies. Grizzlies are considered more aggressive compared to black bears. Adult grizzlies do not climb trees well and respond to danger by standing their ground and warding off attackers. Mothers defending cubs are the most prone to attacking, and are responsible for 70% of humans killed by grizzlies. Grizzly’s weapon is its bite (over 8 megapascals (1160 psi). A grizzly bite could crush a bowling ball. Grizzly bears are not only dangerous, but also endangered animals. Travelling in groups of six or more can drastically reduce the chance of bear-related injuries while hiking in bear country. Also it is advised to use bear bells and bear spray.

COMPARE-4

http://www.completewildlifecontrol.com/Raccoons.html)*

Raccoons are a major problem in Iowa with home and business owners. In the Spring, starting at mid March, female raccoons will birth their litters of pups (3-6) in unusual places. In the fall, raccoons search for foods in lawns. They will systematically destroy a lawn looking for the rich protein source. All year long raccoon feed in dumpsters and fruit trees which in turn creates raccoon droppings. Raccoon droppings may contain parasites’ eggs. Raccoons can bite and claw, causing infections or rabies. Rabies is extremely harmful to humans. They are a pest animal and eat chickens, and other pets or farm animals.

Read and mark the statements as True or False.

1. Alligators live in the south of the USA.

2. Alligators have a mimicry colour.

3. There are few alligators left.

4. Grizzly bears live in the north of the USA.

5. Humans run slower than grizzlies. 6. There are no rattlesnakes in California.

7. A rattlesnake warns before it attacks.

8. Raccoons live all over the USA.

9. Raccoon’s look is deceiving.

10. Raccoons can spread infections.

The USA'S Dangerous Wild Animals

A Over a million alligators live in slow-moving rivers, lakes, marshes and swamps (wetlands) in the southern states of Florida, Louisiana, Texas and Georgia. They are usually 3 to 5 metres long and eat almost anything, swallowing it whole (without chewing). They often hide motionless (without move), usually waiting to snatch (catch) their prey and drag it under the water. Never try to feed alligators or walk too close to the water. You don't want to become an alligator's next meal!

Fascinating tact: Alligators have about 80 teeth which are replaced continuously. Throughout their litetime they go through at least 2.000 of them!

B Rattlesnakes live mostly in the southwestern states, such as California and Arizona and are the most common type of poisonous snake in the country. There are 16 different species, but they all have one thing in common - a rattle on their tail that is used to warn other creatures (animals and people) to stay away. A rattlesnake bite is very painful and the venom can be fatal. So, when you are walking in an area where there could be snakes, watch where you step. If you know there are rattlesnakes around, wear strong leather boots!

Fascinating fact: Baby rattlesnakes can attack right after they are born!

C Grizzly bears live along streams, lakes and rivers in Alaska and northwestern states such as Idaho, Montana, Washington and Wyoming. Although sightings are not very common, these huge animals are the most dangerous of all bears and easily kill or seriously injure humans. They can be unpredictable (you can’t predict what they will do) and ferocious (fierce, angry), especially when they are hungry, injured or with their cubs. So, it a bear comes to you, don't run and if you are attacked, lie face down and play dead!

Fascinating fact: Grizzlies can run much faster than humans and even climb trees!

D Raccoons might look cute and loveable, but they can actually carry many diseases, including rabies, a deadly virus. They are often found in attics or garages, or searching for food in rubbish bins, which they can open with their paws. If you see a raccoon don't touch it. If you are ever scratched by one, wash the scratch well and see a doctor immediately.

Группа 5 (слабые ученики)

Получают упрощенный текст и выполняют задание из учебника.

Which animal:

  1. often steals food from people?
  2. isn’t seen very often?
  3. can kill soon after birth?
  4. is more dangerous at certain times?
  5. usually eats its food in one piece?

The USA'S Dangerous Wild Animals

A More than a million alligators live in the southern US states — Florida, Louisiana, Texas and Georgia. You can find them in slow rivers, lakes, marshes and swamps. These animals are usually 3–5 metres long and will eat almost anything, swallowing their food whole. Alligators often stay very still and hide, waiting for an animal to come close. When they spot prey, they quickly grab it and pull it underwater. For your safety, never try to feed alligators, and don’t get too close to the water’s edge — you definitely don’t want to end up as their next meal!

An interesting fact: alligators have around 80 teeth, and they keep replacing them all their lives. In total, an alligator can go through at least 2000 teeth over its lifetime!

B Rattlesnakes mostly live in the southwestern US states, like California and Arizona. They’re the most common poisonous snakes in the country. There are 16 different types of them, but they all have one thing in common: a rattle on their tail. They shake it to warn other animals — and people — to keep their distance. A rattlesnake bite hurts a lot, and their venom can be deadly. So if you’re walking somewhere snakes might live, watch your steps carefully. If you know rattlesnakes are around, it’s a good idea to wear strong leather boots — they can help protect you.

An interesting fact: baby rattlesnakes can attack and catch animals just minutes after they’re born!

C Grizzly bears live near lakes and rivers in Alaska and northwestern US states — for example, Idaho, Montana, Washington and Wyoming. You don’t see them very often, but these big animals are the most dangerous kind of bear. They can seriously hurt or even kill people. Grizzlies can be very unpredictable and aggressive, especially if they’re hungry, hurt, or with their babies. If a bear comes toward you, don’t run. And if it attacks, lie face down on the ground and pretend to be dead.

An interesting fact: grizzly bears can run a lot faster than people — and they can even climb trees!

D Raccoons may look cute and sweet, but they can actually carry many diseases, including rabies, a deadly virus. You can see them near people’s houses – in attics or garages, or searching for food in rubbish bins, which they can open with their paws. If you see a raccoon don't touch it. If a raccoon scratches you, wash the scratch well and see a doctor quickly.

An interesting fact: raccoons can remember solutions to puzzles and tasks for three years. So if a raccoon understands how to open your rubbish bin, it will remember how to do it again — even after a long time.

The Wolf

The wolf is a wild animal and a close relative of the dog. It’s strong, fast, and very clever. Wolves usually live in forests, mountains, and cold areas. They don’t live alone — they stay together in groups called packs. A pack can have from 5 to 15 wolves. They help each other to hunt, protect their home, and look after the little pups.

Wolves have thick grey or brown fur. This fur keeps them warm when the weather is cold and snowy. They also have big paws — they work like snowshoes and help wolves walk easily in deep snow. Their hearing and sense of smell are amazing. A wolf can hear a mouse move from far away and smell food from several kilometres.

These animals are hunters. They mostly eat deer, moose, and other big animals. Wolves hunt together as a team. First, they find the weakest animal in the group. Then, they work together to catch it. This teamwork helps them get food and survive.

People have different feelings about wolves. In fairy tales, wolves can be scary or even kind. But in real life, wolves try to stay away from people. They are an important part of nature because they help keep the number of other animals balanced. That’s why it’s important to protect them and their homes.
