There are certain PREFIXES (syllables put at the beginning of words) and SUFFIXES (syllables put at the end of words) which are used to form new words. However, there are no certain rules to follow to form one word from another.

There are certain prefixes which mean not or show an opposite state or process. These are:

Exercise 1. Add the correct prefixes to the beginning of the words.

1. When the ambulance came, the man was …….conscious after being knocked down by a car.
2. John left his job because he was…………able to deal with such a large amount of work.
3. That child looks very thin. I think he must be………fed.
4. I………agree with you on this point; I don’t think you’re right.
5. Don’t ……..understand me – I didn’t mean to offend you.
6. It’s …….possible to finish this test in 30 minutes; we need more time.
7. It’s ……..logical to buy a new laptop when your old one works well.
8. It’s ……responsible to skip lessons.
9. Two versions of the film are …….consistent with each other.
10. Jack ……behaved in class and was sent to the head teacher’s office.

Exercise 2. You have 4 statements with negative-prefix adjectives. Decide if you agree or disagree with each statement. Discuss with your partner. You have 6 minutes.

1. It’s irresponsible for teenagers to have unlimited access to the Internet.
2. Cheating in exams is dishonest.
3. Being impolite to teachers is always unacceptable.
4. Some rules at school are illogical.
