Part I

Semyon Alekseyevich Lavochkin was born on September 11th in 1900  in the town of Smolensk. His father was a teacher in a Jewish school. His mother was a housewife. There were three children in the family. Semyon was the eldest.

He studied at a classical school in the town of Kursk. Semyon was good at all the subjects. And in 1917 he finished classical school with a gold medal.

During the Civil War Semyon joined the Red Army.

In 1920, he entered Moscow Higher Technical School . In 1927 Semyon Alekseyevich graduated from the Technical School qualified as an aerodynamic engineer.

Part II

From 1927 till  1938 S.A. worked at different plants and design bureaus. Fighter aircrafts became the main focus in his work. In 1939 Lavochkin established his own bureau.

Teaming up with Vladimir Gorbunov and Mikhail Gudkov, he designed his first fighter LaGG-1 and then LaGG-3 which was pushed into production for the Red Army Air Force in the thousands.

During The Great Patriotic War S.A. Lavochkin worked as the Chief Designer at  Plant N21 in the city of Gorky.

By the Spring of 1945, world class fighters produced in significant numbers were rolling off the production lines of the plant . Two out of five Soviet fighter aircrafts  were made in the city of Gorky.

The residents of the Gorky region raised more than 60 million rubles for the squadron “Valery Chkalov”. The first La-5 aircrafts were delivered to the fighter air regiments in January, 1943.

La- aircrafts were the design revolution in Soviet fighters. The designer was honored with high State awards.

Part III

The air defense was crucial.

Not only the La -fighters took to the sky to achieve air superiority over Nazi Germany.

There were also Yak and MiG aircrafts, and besides the ones from the UK and the USA.

As we can see from the diagram the number of the Soviet fighters is more than three times the number of those delivered through the Lend-Lease Programme.

 

The La-fightes became a real breakthrough in air defense fighter aircrafts. They were capable of fighting German fighters . The La-7 modification had even greater power and improved maneuverability. It outperformed Messerschmitt in speed and armament and became one of the best models of Soviet aviation during the Second World War.

The La-fighters were  piloted by many of Soviet aces. They were all awarded with the Gold  Star of Hero. Among them we can mention

Kozhedub Ivan Nikitovich ,he won 64 battles;

Evstigneyev Kirill Alexyevich, he won 55 battles;

Kostylyov Georgiy Dmitrievich, he won 54 battles;

Onufriyenko Grigoriy Denisovich, he won 50 battles;

Skomorohov Nikolaiy Mihailovich, he won 47 battles.

Here is an extract from a letter written by  S.A. Lavochkin to a boy whose dream was to become a designer. It was published in the Pioneer magazine in 1945. Read this extract and you will certainly find the answer to  our question.

“A letter to an unfamiliar boy” (“Pioneer” N1-2,1945)

“ I can’t see my enemy, a German designer, who’s working hard on his drawings. But being unable to see him, I am fighting with him, I am focusing all my will and imagination, my knowledge and experience to create a better new aircraft, in order for our fighter to win the battle against an enemy’s one.”
